Left for Dead

A spirit distilled entirely from Boulevard Beer.

Left For Dead is a spirit distilled entirely from Boulevard Beer with each batch being made from a different Boulevard beer, or multiple beers in some cases. Since we only use beer that Boulevard would have otherwise disposed of, the type of beer and the quantity is unpredictable, thus the number of bottles of each batch of Left For Dead are extremely limited. In this ongoing project, each batch of Left For Dead tastes and smells as unique as the beers from which they were distilled. The final product is bottled at 89 proof, a nod to 1989, the year Boulevard was founded.

At the intersection of Kansas City brewing and distilling, you have Left For Dead, a spirit distilled entirely from Boulevard Brewing Co.’s beer. Our Head Distiller Nathan Perry joined our team after five years of working in the lab for Boulevard. From working there, he knew the brewery had to consistently dump large amounts of beer for a variety of reasons. There the idea was sparked- turning beer that would have otherwise been ‘left for dead’ into a new product, a distilled spirit.

Our Process

As the beer was intended for consumers, the beer arrives to us in bottles (33,000 of them one time!), cans, or kegs. We empty those beers into our fermenters, let the beer rest for a few days, and then pump it over to our copper pot still for distillation. As the process of distillation is simply concentrating alcohol, that’s exactly what we do with the beer. The distillate is then finished in oak for a short…or not so short amount of time. Each resulting Left For Dead batch is an essence of the beer or beers from which it was distilled, except at 89 proof!

How to Enjoy

EVERY BATCH OF LEFT FOR DEAD IS UNIQUE AND LIMITED. WE RECOMMEND TRYING THE SPIRIT NEAT ALONGSIDE THE BEER FROM WHICH IT WAS DISTILLED. IF YOU’RE ABLE TO FIND MULTIPLE BATCHES, TASTE TESTING SIDE BY SIDE IS IDEAL. THIS PROJECT IS INTENDED TO BE A FUN COLLABORATION WITH A LOCAL BREWER TO USE BEER THAT WOULD HAVE OTHERWISE GONE TO WASTE AND ANSWER THE QUESTION, “WHAT WOULD MY BEER TAST LIKE AT 44.5 ABV?”. DON’T GET TOO HUNG UP ON COCKTAILS, IT’S JUST FUN.
